Publications
Over the years Professor Vécsei published over 400 scientific reports, which were published in national and international medicacal periodicals and attracted world-wide attention.

Noteable is also his permanent lecture activity both at home and abroad. Prof. Vécsei has held more than 200 lectures since he became the head of the Trauma Department in Vienna and he often is invited.

Since he started his position as Head of the Trauma Department of the MUV eight leading functions in other houses were occupied by his former co-workers and pupils.

With his assistance and promotion seven members of the Trauma Department could get the Venia docendi since his nomination to the full Professor.

Professor Vécsei is considered internationally as one of the leading precursors of the intramedullary osteosynthesis, he achieved great merits in the advancement of this stabilisation procedure and developed independently new implants. Meanwhile they are internationally used and made an important contribution to the success of this system.

Furthermore he cared about the acceptance of the interlocking nailing and was considerably involved in the advancement and innovation of the intramedullary osteosynthesis particularly in the range of the unreamed nailing. In this course he was initiator of the 1st OP-Courses for IMOS (1978) and long years the supervisor of many surgical-procedure courses, which gave many young colleagues an understanding of the basic principles of this procedure and helped the intramedullary osteosynthesis to begin its triumphant advance around the world.

Due to his large experience on the area of septic trauma surgery, Professor Vécsei is a well known promoter for the use of local antibiotic chains for bone infections.

Worth mentioning is also the wide research in the field of the biomechanics of the pelvis, which is a necessary basic work for the development of the stabilisation of complex pelvis fractures.

Professor Vécsei is an initiator and patron of the research in the field of cartilage transplantation. In the last years he was successful in this sector and could achieve some important scientific insights.

It is also important to mention that under his direction at the Trauma Department of the Wilhelminenspital an internal quality control was introduced and scientific research and publication activity in a municipality hospital of Vienna were relaunched. Professor Vécsei has changed substantially the structure of this department towards a modern Trauma Department and made it to one of the most powerful of Vienna.

Since many years has he devoted himself to the general aspects of the organization and treatment of polytraumatized.

He is founder (1992) and has been Editor in Chief of the scientific journal "Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care" (formerly "Osteosynthese International" ) published by Thieme ( until 2005).
